A couple of days ago, the NHL teams drafted who they hope will become the future Zetterberg and Crosby of the NHL. Without a surprise the 2008 NHL Draft 1st pick was Canadian Steven Stamkos. Stamkos was drafted first overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning who seems adamant in making last season’s poor run a thing of the past.

The 2008 draft was particular filled of great defensemen prospects. However, I feel that the two best hockey players of this year’s draft are goal scorers. Nikita Filatov was the first European picked, 6th overall, by the Columbus Blue Jackets. That guy is fast and skilled and could be a revelation for Columbus.

In the coming years, expect Stamkos and Filatov to give goalkeepers nightmares.

Tonight, Kobe Bryant will try to keep the Lakers alive in the NBA 2008 finals. The Lakers saw game 4 slip out of their hands in a heart-breaking fashion. The Celtics pulled an incredible comeback and now lead the series 3 games to 1 and will be looking to close it down tonight.

NBA MVP Bryant had an amazing season and playoff, but it looks like he’s falling a little short in this final. However, Kobe is not great for nothing, and it ain’t over ’till it’s over.

Deception for Malkin Fans

After loosing the Cup to Detroit 2 weeks ago, the Pittsburg fans saw one of their star player lose another fight. Last Thursday, the NHL held their annual Awards ceremony. Evgeni Malkin was nominated for the NHL’s MVP, alongside Flames’ Jarome Iginla and Caps’ Alexander Ovechkin. Now, it was really a two headed race, as despite having a good season, Iginla didn’t size up to the two Russians. In the end, it’s Ovechkin that won the award.

Malkin had a great season nonetheless, and had the Pens won the Stanley Cup against Detroit, he’d probably would have won it. Talking about Detroit, Henrik Zetterberg really should have been a nominee for this year’s MVP as well!

Kobe Bryant has been on fire this post-season, leading the Lakers to an unexpected championship run. The Lakers currently leads the Western Conference finals against the San Antonio Spurs 3 games to 1.

Game 5 is being played tonight in Los Angeles, and Kobe will try to get his team in the 2008 NBA Finals by defeating the defending champs.

Cristiano Ronaldo just crowned an amazing league season with Manchester United by beating Chelsea in the Champions League final to win the European Cup. Ronaldo was the EPL best goals scorer this season with 31 (7 more than second places Adebayor and Torres!). All and all, he has scored 45 goals so far this season. Manchester United also won the league title.

Cristiano will be looking to keep his form when he represents Portugal this summer in the EURO 2008 which will take place in Austria and Switzerland starting June 7.

Ryan Babel was recently voted Liverpool’s young player of the year by the club’s fan. Babel received 80% of all the votes – second place went to Brazilian Lucas Leiva (15.4%). Babel had a breakthrough year with the Reds, scoring 10 goals, and finishing the season in excellent form after what some people considered a slow start for the young Dutchman. Babel is expected to play this summer for Holland in the Euro 2008.
